From February 6th to 16th, 2026, the canton of Parrita will host the 29th National Mule Festival, which attracts hundreds of visitors every year to witness a celebration of local, rural tradition. The festival, a unique event where mules and their riders take center stage, was born to pay tribute to this noble animal worker, so key to the economic development of Parrita.
The festival is centered around the mule, a humble yet powerful animal that has been an integral part of Costa Rican culture for generations. Mules were once used to transport goods and people through the rugged terrain of the country; today they continue to be celebrated for their strength and endurance.
For ten days, mules and riders showcase their skills in speed competitions on an oval racetrack within the fairgrounds. The racetrack is called the “mulometer,” and on the day of the event, the mules are bathed and groomed for the incredibly popular race. More than 50 mules participate, and fans cheer on their favorites, like “La Macha” who is the current champion, a winner of three races in a row. The race is a thrilling spectacle, with mules galloping at top speed and riders clinging to their backs. The competition is fierce, and the winner is crowned with a ribbon and a round of applause from the crowd.
This tradition began in 1989 as a mule race between farm workers who knew the true nature of their animals, confident that their mules could compete with spirit and stamina. The first few years it was held in Esterillos at the airfield, but later this festivity was brought to Parrita by Mr. Aristides Porras. Now it takes place at the fairgrounds of the Association for the Well-being of the Canton of Parrita (ASOBIPA) with the support of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).

On Friday, Feb 6, 2026, the festival begins with a parade through the streets of Parrita, featuring beautifully decorated mules and their riders. The mules are adorned with bright flowers, colorful ribbons, and intricate harnesses, making them a stunning sight to behold. The parade is accompanied by lively music and the sounds of clanging bells, creating a festive atmosphere that is contagious.
While the mule races are the featured and unique events, there’s much more on offer during the ten days of the festival. Among the wide variety of activities are: the riding championship, the ‘tope’, the tractor rally, the parade, concerts, machinery exhibitions, carousels, bumper cars, dance performances, and bullfights. Local crafts and artisanal products will also be showcased. Across the festival grounds visitors can sample local cuisine such as tamales, gallo pinto, casado, and the ever popular churro while enjoying the sounds of marimba bands and other live music.
On Saturday, 7 February 2026, starting at 2pm, the Parrita Town Welfare Association presents the participation of 24 BANDS from different communities of the country, who will fill the streets with music, energy and tradition.
From communal, collegiate, independent and rhythm bands, the afternoon promises to be unforgettable with national talent, choreographies and percussion. The whole community and visitors are invited to join the festivities, support the participating bands and enjoy this show that is an essential part of our traditions.
