In February we received an emergency call reporting a howler monkey found on the ground. This situation was highly unusual, as howler monkeys are rarely seen on the ground, much less in a resting position. This species is known for spending most of its time in the treetops, where they feel safest and feed on leaves, which make up their exclusive diet.

First, Assess

Upon arrival, our rescue team quickly assessed the animal’s condition and noticed something was clearly wrong. The monkey was visibly weak and in distress. We made the decision to take it to our KSTR facility, where our veterinary team could provide specialized care.

Once at the center, the veterinarians performed an examination to determine the extent of the injuries. The monkey had a deep wound that severely affected her right arm.

After careful evaluation, it was determined that amputation was the only viable option to save its life. The surgery was delicate, but despite the risks, it was carried out with the goal of improving the monkey’s quality of life.

Intensive Treatment

The postoperative treatment was intensive. Howler monkeys are strict folivores, meaning their diet consists solely of tree leaves, and any dietary change must be carefully controlled. Our veterinary care team made sure that Hope (as we decided to name the monkey) received a variety of fresh leaves suitable for its species to keep its gastrointestinal system healthy and prevent additional complications.

Additionally, to monitor her health, we conducted regular blood tests, which allowed us to detect any changes in blood levels quickly. This was how we learned Hope was experiencing severe anemia. The situation was critical, Hope was close to losing her life. But thanks to the intensive care and constant efforts of our veterinary team, her condition slowly began to improve.

It was a long process, full of uncertainties, but we never lost hope.

Signs of Recovery

In the following weeks, Hope showed signs of recovery. The wound began to heal and respond to treatment, her blood levels started to stabilize. Although losing a limb posed a challenge, her survival instinct and resilience were remarkable. As Hope recovered, she also became stronger and more independent, which filled us with hope.

Finally, after some months of intensive care, obtaining positive results from her bloodwork and assessing her movements, we knew she was ready to return back into the wild. The day Hope returned to the jungle was a day of celebration for the entire team. Seeing her return to her natural habitat, where she could live freely, was a reminder of the important work we do and the need to continue protecting these vulnerable species.

Hope not only survived but once again demonstrated the incredible resilience and adaptability of wildlife. This case underscores the importance of acting quickly in emergency situations, as well as having a committed and specialized team that can offer the best care and attention to animals in need.

En febrero recibimos una llamada de emergencia informando del hallazgo de un mono aullador en el suelo. Esta situación era sumamente inusual, ya que rara vez se ven monos aulladores en el suelo, y mucho menos en posición de descanso. Esta especie es conocida por pasar la mayor parte del tiempo en las copas de los árboles, donde se sienten más seguros y se alimentan de hojas, que constituyen su dieta exclusiva.

Al llegar, nuestro equipo de rescate evaluó rápidamente el estado del animal y notó que algo andaba mal. El mono estaba visiblemente débil y en peligro. Decidimos llevarlo a nuestras instalaciones de KSTR, donde nuestro equipo veterinario podría brindarle atención especializada.

Una vez en el centro, los veterinarios lo examinaron para determinar la gravedad de las lesiones. El mono tenía una herida profunda que le afectaba gravemente el brazo derecho.

Tras una cuidadosa evaluación, se determinó que la amputación era la única opción viable para salvarle la vida. La cirugía fue delicada, pero a pesar de los riesgos, se llevó a cabo con el objetivo de mejorar la calidad de vida del mono. El tratamiento postoperatorio fue intensivo. Los monos aulladores son folívoros estrictos, lo que significa que su dieta consiste únicamente en hojas de árboles, y cualquier cambio en la dieta debe controlarse cuidadosamente. Nuestro equipo veterinario se aseguró de que Hope (como decidimos llamar al mono) recibiera una variedad de hojas frescas adecuadas para su especie para mantener su sistema gastrointestinal sano y prevenir complicaciones adicionales.

Además, para monitorear su salud, le realizamos análisis de sangre regulares, lo que nos permitió detectar rápidamente cualquier cambio en los niveles sanguíneos. Así fue como supimos que Hope sufría de anemia grave. La situación era crítica; Hope estuvo a punto de perder la vida. Pero gracias a los cuidados intensivos y al esfuerzo constante de nuestro equipo veterinario, su condición comenzó a mejorar lentamente.

Fue un proceso largo, lleno de incertidumbres, pero nunca perdimos la esperanza.

En las semanas siguientes, Hope mostró signos de recuperación. La herida comenzó a cicatrizar y a responder al tratamiento, y sus niveles sanguíneos comenzaron a estabilizarse. Aunque perder una extremidad representó un desafío, su instinto de supervivencia y resiliencia fueron notables. A medida que Hope se recuperaba, también se volvió más fuerte e independiente, lo que nos llenó de esperanza.

Finalmente, tras varios meses de cuidados intensivos, con resultados positivos en sus análisis de sangre y la evaluación de sus movimientos, supimos que estaba lista para regresar a la naturaleza. El día que Hope regresó a la selva fue un día de celebración para todo el equipo. Verla regresar a su hábitat natural, donde pudo vivir en libertad, fue un recordatorio de la importante labor que realizamos y de la necesidad de seguir protegiendo a estas especies vulnerables.

Hope no solo sobrevivió, sino que demostró una vez más la increíble resiliencia y adaptabilidad de la vida silvestre. Este caso subraya la importancia de actuar con rapidez en situaciones de emergencia, así como de contar con un equipo comprometido y especializado que pueda ofrecer la mejor atención a los animales que lo necesitan.
