Our Mission in the Tropics

It’s exciting to see new beginnings that build on traditions of celebrating the people, wildlife, and unique spirit of our community. As this new magazine embarks on its journey, we at The Sloth Institute are thrilled to be part of the conversation once again, sharing what we do and why it matters.

Based in Manuel Antonio, The Sloth Institute is dedicated to enhancing and expanding the welfare and conservation of sloths in Costa Rica. These gentle, quiet creatures are iconic to our rainforests, but they face growing threats that require informed, science-based, and community-driven solutions.

Our mission follows a four-part approach to tackle the most pressing issues sloths face:

RESCUE, REHABILITATE, and RELEASE orphaned and injured sloths, giving them a second chance at life in their natural habitat.

RESEARCH involving captive, wild, and recently released sloths, often in collaboration with conservationists and scientists from around the world, to better understand their needs and behaviours.

EDUCATION that shares responsible, science-backed sloth information with the public and provides training for local officials and responders on how to handle sloth rescues safely and effectively.

CONSERVATION programs that reduce human-related dangers, like habitat destruction and electrocution, to protect the environment sloths call home.

Sloths may move slowly, but their need for protection is urgent! Every sloth we rescue contributes to the preservation of fragile ecosystems, helping maintain the delicate balance of nature. By protecting these animals, we are also protecting the rich biodiversity of our forests and ensuring a sustainable future for all species.

Es emocionante ver nuevos comienzos que se basan en las tradiciones de celebrar a las personas, la vida silvestre y el espíritu único de nuestra comunidad. Con el inicio de esta nueva revista, en el Instituto del Perezoso nos complace volver a formar parte de la conversación, compartiendo lo que hacemos y su importancia.

Con sede en Manuel Antonio, el Instituto del Perezoso se dedica a mejorar y expandir el bienestar y la conservación de los perezosos en Costa Rica. Estas criaturas gentiles y silenciosas son emblemáticas de nuestras selvas tropicales, pero enfrentan amenazas crecientes que requieren soluciones informadas, con base científica e impulsadas por la comunidad.

Nuestra misión sigue un enfoque de cuatro pasos para abordar los problemas más urgentes que enfrentan los perezosos:

RESCATAR, REHABILITAR y LIBERAR a los perezosos huérfanos y heridos, brindándoles una segunda oportunidad de vida en su hábitat natural.

INVESTIGACIÓN con perezosos en cautiverio, silvestres y recientemente liberados, a menudo en colaboración con conservacionistas y científicos de todo el mundo, para comprender mejor sus necesidades y comportamientos.

EDUCACIÓN que comparte información responsable y con respaldo científico sobre perezosos con el público y brinda capacitación a funcionarios locales y personal de respuesta sobre cómo manejar rescates de perezosos de forma segura y eficaz.

Programas de CONSERVACIÓN que reducen los peligros relacionados con el ser humano, como la destrucción del hábitat y la electrocución, para proteger el entorno que los perezosos consideran su hogar.

Los perezosos pueden moverse lentamente, ¡pero su necesidad de protección es urgente! Cada perezoso que rescatamos contribuye a la preservación de ecosistemas frágiles, ayudando a mantener el delicado equilibrio de la naturaleza. Al proteger a estos animales, también protegemos la rica biodiversidad de nuestros bosques y aseguramos un futuro sostenible para todas las especies.
