In and around Manuel Antonio National Park, spotting a sloth is always a memorable experience. Whether they’re curled up in the treetops or slowly making their way from branch to branch, these iconic animals never fail to capture attention!

But sloths aren’t only found inside the park. They live throughout the region - along roadsides, in gardens, near beaches, and even in unexpected corners where forest and human life intersect. And now, anyone who sees a sloth has a chance to contribute to their protection.

Take the Citizen Sloth Scientist Survey and share what you saw and where!  Even if you’re not sure which species you spotted, the survey will guide you through and give its best guess based on your answers. You can also upload any photos to help confirm the sighting.

Why share your sloth sighting?

Although sloths are a familiar sight to many, there's still much we don't know about where they live and their overall population size. Each sighting helps researchers understand more about their behaviour, movements, and the challenges they may be facing in various

environments.

Whether your sighting happened on a trail, in a nearby neighbourhood, or while passing through the area, your input can help build a clearer picture of sloth life in the wild!

The survey also allows you to report sloths in danger - such as those injured, stuck on infrastructure, or being used in harmful ways for tourism. Your report can make a real difference.

En el Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio y sus alrededores, avistar un oso perezoso siempre es una experiencia memorable. Ya sea acurrucados en las copas de los árboles o desplazándose lentamente de rama en rama, ¡estos icónicos animales siempre llaman la atención!

Pero los osos perezosos no solo se encuentran dentro del parque. Viven en toda la región: en los  caminos, en jardines, cerca de playas e incluso en rincones inesperados donde el bosque y la vida humana se cruzan. Y ahora, cualquiera que vea un perezoso tiene la oportunidad de contribuir a su protección.

Incluso si no estás seguro de qué especie viste, la encuesta te guiará y te dará la mejor estimación basada en tus respuestas. También puedes subir fotos para confirmar el avistamiento.

¿Por qué compartir tu avistamiento de perezoso?

Aunque los perezosos son una imagen familiar para muchos, aún desconocemos mucho sobre dónde viven y el tamaño de su población. Cada avistamiento ayuda a los investigadores a comprender mejor su comportamiento, sus movimientos y los desafíos que pueden enfrentar en diversos entornos.

Ya sea que su avistamiento haya ocurrido en un sendero, en un vecindario cercano o al pasar por la zona, ¡su opinión puede ayudar a comprender mejor la vida de los osos perezosos en la naturaleza!

¿Ha visto un oso perezoso en peligro?

La encuesta también le permite reportar osos perezosos en peligro, como aquellos heridos, atascados en infraestructura o utilizados de forma perjudicial para el turismo. Su reporte puede marcar la diferencia.
